FINES for late returns in Essex libraries are set to double.
Essex County Council have revealed that the daily charge for a late return of books, audiobooks and CDs to libraries in the county will increase from 10p to 20p.
The changes will come into effect on July 3, and are the first time changes have been made since 2009.
Elsewhere, charges for photocopying, printing, DVDs and book loans from the British Library will also rise, and there will be a £1 charge to replace lost or damaged library cards.
Councillor Susan Barker, the cabinet member responsible for libraries, said: “Library fees have stayed the same for eight years, so these changes are necessary, especially as Government funding continues to fall and will be phased out completely by 2020.
“Any income from fees is invested back into the service so we can continue to offer a range of library services across the county.
“Customers will still be able to borrow books and reserve items in stock free of charge.”
