The winners of a prestigious annual town award have been announced.
In an evening buzzing with excitement and anticipation to “rival the Oscars”, the Pride of Maldon Awards were revealed last week.
The winners were recognised for their hard work and contribution to the community.
A spokesman said: “Mayor Flo Shaughnessy had invited more than 100 local volunteers to join her in celebration of the inspiring work of all those unsung heroes in Maldon whose quiet work behind the scenes contributes so greatly to the Maldon community.
“With so many nominations to choose from, the panel had a hard job narrowing it down to just nine awards.”
The awards were announced following musical performances by Emily Rose and William Oddy, of Plume Academy.
The winners of the Pride of Maldon Award were Helen and Colin Philpott for their considerable involvement in several charities.
The duo are part of Action for Family Carers, the Twinning Association, the Gepp Charity, the Price Charity and the Joseph Henry Unwin Trust.
Presented by councillor Martin Harvey, Citizen of the Year was awarded to Siobhan Gower whose commitment, dedication and hard work for the Scouting community was described as “humbling.”
Carer of the Year, presented by councillor Lillian Dowling, went to Karen Redgrave and Paula Clarke.
Paula is a carer who makes a significantly positive impact on many lives at Longfield Care Home and “goes well beyond the call of duty”.
Young Achiever of the Year was awarded to Lewis Bridgeman, a Year Nine Plume Academy student excelling at drama and many other subjects.
The spokesman added: “He was an amazing quiz master at a recent charity quiz at Plume.
“The whole atmosphere of the evening was electric due to his personality shining through and amazing sense of humour.
“What a great ambassador for the Plume Academy. The school can feel rightly proud of all his achievements both academic and social.”
Other winners included:
Educator of the Year – Wentworth School headteacher Dawn Dack.
Community Impact Award – Maldon Citizens Advice Bureau.
Long Service Volunteer – Peter Webb, of the Royal British Legion.
Arts and Culture - All Saints’ School teacher Julia Chilver.
Business Contribution to the Community – Queen Victoria pub.
