A dead body was discovered in the River Crouch last Tuesday.

The Essex Police Marine Unit was notified that somebody had discovered what he thought was a body on Bridgemarsh Island.

The unit responded with a full range of rescue equipment and together with the force helicopter located the body close to the waterline.

Subsequent to a forensic examination, the team recovered the body utilising specialist skills and equipment to the landing stage at Bridgemarsh marina.

Sgt Andy Ford from the Marine Unit said: "This operation further demonstrates the specialist skills needed to complete this sensitive operation safely.

"There are a number of forensic considerations that need to considered together with logistical hurdles to overcome in order to safeguard the officers deployed and treat the body with appropriate respect in a difficult environment.

"We also thank our partners within HM Coastguard and the RNLI for assisting us in this deployment.”

The body has yet to be identified.
