A FOOTBALL team have launched a fundraiser after one of their team-mates suffered a horrific injury.
Tillingham Hotspur Veterans set up the fundraising appeal for Richard Pearson, 49, after he fractured his leg during a match on February 15.
Richard was told he can’t work for eight weeks, so the team decided to raise funds to help him through his recovery.
He said: “Ten to 15 minutes into the game I went in for a tackle and my foot was planted in the ground as another guy came through and he took me down.
“I double fractured my bone.
“A few of the guys stayed with me on the pitch and made sure I was fully covered and warm, and there were a couple of firemen there who helped out.
“Someone phoned a paramedic from Burnham who wasn’t on duty but came anyway and the ambulance got there really quickly – a big thanks to everyone who helped.”
Richard has played for Tillingham for almost seven years and used to play for Burnham Ramblers FC until he was 30. He said: “Finding out about the fundraiser I felt it was a really touching thing for someone to do and for people to donate to.
“I was never going to take the money. Fortunately we’re OK financially although I can’t work for about eight weeks or so, but it was a lovely thing to do.
“As soon as I found out about it, I said I don’t need the money but let’s try and do something to help the clubs centred around Tillingham.
“We definitely plan on it going back into the club.”
Richard and wife Louise plan to spend the money on either a defibrillator or trauma kit for the club.
Richard added:
“Regarding playing again, I would never say never, but I’m nearly 50 and I’ve done OK.
“I might have to think seriously about that decision, but it’s quite early days yet.
“I’ve got this metal pole down the front of my shin so I’m not really thinking about playing football at the moment. But I thoroughly enjoyed playing in the team and appreciate all their effort.”
The group has raised nearly £1,000 for the appeal.
