A councillor has labelled designs included in a new retirement village 'horrendous'
Plans for a new retirement village in Burnham-on-Crouch off Maldon Road were given the green light last night (October 8) at a meeting of Maldon District Council's Planning Committee.
The plans were approved after changes were made to the designs but some councillors weren't happy with the changes.
Councillor Wendy Stamp referred to one building, which will host shops, as 'horrendous'.
She said: "I remember saying at the time, I think that is horrendous, I still think it's horrendous but i also do have sympathy with the developer who is trying to appease 30 councillors who have different visions.
"The scale, bulk and mass is awful, I don't know what members want to do about it, but I certainly don't like it.
"The bungalows and other buildings are great and try to incorporate what Burnham already has in its town is fine, but this is just too big."
Councillor Kevin Lagan added: "The developers have been incredibly collaborative. The bungalows I think are exceptional I think they look so much better and certainly are in appearance.
"Where I have a problem is with the larger buildings, they still look like a shopping centre."
