STOW Maries Great War Aerodrome propelled its way into summer with a sold-out return of its signature Wings and Wheels event.
Now entrenched in Maldon’s social calendar, the popular event always attracts great crowds and high-level attention – and this year it outdid itself.
While visitor numbers were strictly controlled to maintain high levels of Covid security, the site still welcomed a throng of visitors, from near and far, to bask in the sunshine and have a great family day out.
Aerodrome patrons Lord Lieutenant of Essex Jenny Tolhurst and popular media historian Dan Snow enjoyed an exciting air display from period and classic aircraft, viewed more than 150 classic vehicles and explored the site’s many exhibitions.
Dan was thrilled with the success of the event.
He said: “Its always great to be on the aerodrome, but to see it in all its splendour after all the challenges the heritage community has – and still is – facing today, is brilliant.
“This aerodrome is fast becoming the number one Great War site in the UK.”
Ecstatic airfield boss Ian Flint echoed his enthusiasm.
“What a great day,” he said
“The visitors are beaming with big smiles, the weather was perfect and the aircraft and vehicles are all great.
At a time when everyone needs to get some sunshine and fun, we’re honoured that so many chose to come to us.”
The aerodrome is open from 10am to 4pm, Friday to Sunday. Visit stowmaries.org.uk.
