PLANS have been revealed to build new homes next to a historic grade two listed building.
Developers want to put up three two-storey houses on the site of disused farm buildings next to Stow Hall, on Woodham Road, Stow Maries.
Stow Hall dates from the early 17th Century and was extended in the Victorian era.
The planning application describes it as an "architectural gem", but says the main farm buildings nearby, which would be demolished to make way for the homes, have "little architectural merit".
The developers claim the proposals will improve the area.
The application says: "The farmstead provides little aesthetic value to the area due to the large empty barns."
It adds: "Removal of the modern farm buildings, which are considered large and unsightly, and replacing with more appropriately scaled and more sympathetic architecture will enhance the setting of the hall and the wider environment."
Maldon District Council will rule on the application.
