PHOTOS taken by a respected photographer in the community are being displayed over the coming weeks at Burnham Museum.

The late Derek Argent was a photographer for the Daily Gazette and the Maldon and Burnham Standard for more than 50 years.

He was a much loved figure in Burnham and left his mark on the community.

When he passed away in 2017, his son Steven, who was also a Gazette photographer for 30 years, was left with his old photos taken for the paper.

These photos date back to the 1960s and up to 2000.

Steven said: "There were colour slides and thousands of 120 negs and lots of old black and white prints. What to do with them?"

And just before Covid hit, he decided to hand them over to the Burnham Museum who are now running an exhibition of these glimpses into the area's past.

The exhibition started on Saturday and will be running through to August 25.

It is open for the public on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday from 1.30pm to 4.30pm.

The black and white photos given to the museum were taken from the 1970s onwards, all in Burnham and surrounding areas.

Steven added: "When I finish putting the images into categories l plan to give the computer to the museum where anyone could search the catalogue for whatever reason.

"The photos give a good social history of life in Burnham through the decades."

Visitors can find the museum on the West Quay at the end of Coronation Road.
