A CHARITY day helped raise money toward a bar at a popular care centre.

The bar was the wish of a much-loved man in the community for the day centre he attended.

Knightswood Day Care Centre is a haven in Asheldham for people from the Dengie.

The late Ken Davis regularly visited the centre and after a garden renovation he said on a TV show the only improvement he could imagine would be a bar.

Granddaughter Kirsty Neave started a GoFundMe fundraiser for a bar at the centre in his memory.

A charity day at the Royal Oak pub on Fambridge Road, on Saturday was held to commemorate Mr Davis, who died last May, and raised £2,504 to grant his wish.

Live music was provided by Not My Circus and supporters enjoyed a hog roast, games, an auction and raffle.

Auction items included a signed Essex Cricket Club shirt, a France get-away, an evening at Romford Dogs, Burnham Golf Club vouchers, a prize donated by Heybridge Swifts, and restaurant vouchers.

Mr Davis’ great-granddaughter, Amy MacLachlan, worked tirelessly organising the prizes.

Kirsty said: “It was a great day with over 100 people in attendance despite very wet weather.

“Brilliant band Not My Circus entertained enthusiastic crowd.

"Perfect hog roast supplied by Kim and Carol at the Royal Oak.

"Thank you to Dave and Luke Wait of DJ Wait and Sons for supplying and hosting garden games which were a huge triumph.

“Knightswood staff attended and were delighted with the amount of support shown towards the event at a local friendly venue.

She added: “It was an emotional day for all but thoroughly enjoyable.

“One step closer to Grandad ‘Fix-it’ getting his bar as requested on TV.”

The bar in the garden would be used for serving ice cream, tea, coffee and mocktails.

The fundraiser is still open and donations are welcome.
