HOMELESS shelters and food banks across Essex have benefitted after a venue was left with more than 1,000 unused dinners due to a wave of Covid-related party cancellations.

Country house party venue Braxted Park Estate, in Great Braxted, suffered a wave of cancelled parties when Omicron hit the country.

The estate would typically host more than 3,000 guests last month, but numbers were cut by 50 per cent as the new Covid variant hit the county.

This meant it was left with 50 unused turkeys, about half a tonne of fresh, organic turkey meat and more than 1,000 unused Turkey dinners.

Duncan Clark, estate owner and Country Food Trust ambassador, Duncan Clark, donated all 50 of the turkeys to homeless shelters or food banks including Beacon House in Colchester and CHESS homeless shelter in Chelmsford.

CHESS was a significant beneficiary, receiving 28 turkeys.

On getting the food donation Rob Saggs, CEO of CHESS, said: "We do all that we can to ensure that our clients receive the best that we are able to offer them, and having these quality turkeys crowns will ensure that our clients that have previously been homeless, will have a feast over this winter period. Thank you."
