A COUPLE is retiring from their high street shop after 46 years in business.

Andrew Wilson has worked in Maldon High Street since 1976 when his father-in-law ran a curtain shop at the top of the street, and he and his wife opened their own shop nearby soon after.

In 1990 his father-in-law retired and Andrew combined their businesses to create Upstairs Downstairs in Edwards Walk.

Upstairs Downstairs is a boutique shop which specialises in home furnishings, interiors, gifts, skincare, fashion accessories and toys.

Andrew says the shop has been well supported over the years with lots of loyal customers and new ones regularly coming in.

After 46 years in the high street, Andrew and his wife Gill are retiring.

On their decision, Andrew said: "I'm 70 now, I've got to stop at some point."

The shop is holding a retirement sale with up to 50 per cent off items.

A spokesman for Edwards Walk Shopping Arcade said: "It has been an absolute pleasure working alongside Andrew and his team.

"We wish him a well deserved and happy retirement.

"Please come and support his retirement sale, there are some amazing bargains to be had."

After its stock has been cleared out at the end of April, the shop will close for refurbishment and a new couple will be re-opening it, still as Upstairs Downstairs.
