A 20-year-old involved in a fatal crash died after suffering "multiple injuries", an inquest has heard.
Jamie Kitching, from South Woodham Ferrers, died in the crash in Cranes Farm Road in Basildon on February 15.
Officers and paramedics were called at 9.40pm, but Mr Kitching died after being transported to hospital.
A police investigation is still ongoing into the circumstances leading up to the crash.
An inquest into his death was opened at Essex Coroner’s Court in Chelmsford this morning.
His family did not attend the hearing which was overseen by area coroner Lincoln Brookes.
Coroner’s officer, Linda Calder, said: “Jamie Kitching from South Woodham Ferrers was driving in Cranes Farm Road, Basildon on February 15 and was involved in a crash.
“Medics and police attended and he was taken to Basildon Hospital but sadly died and Essex Police launched an investigation.
“On February 22 a post-mortem was held, and toxicology samples were taken. A provisional cause of death was given of multiple injuries caused by road traffic collision.”
Mrs Brookes added: “I am opening the inquest into the death of Jamie Kitching and adjourning it.
"We will wait to hear if police want it adjourned due to any investigation and a date will be confirmed.”
Following his death, Mr Kitching’s family paid tribute to him and described him as much-loved son, brother, partner, grandson, nephew and cousin.
In a statement at the time they said: “Jay was a kind, caring, loveable young man. His smile was infectious to those around him.
“His love of cars was endless. You couldn’t have a conversation without it involving something to do with them.
“Jay will be hugely missed by all of his family and friends.”
Police shut the road overnight and into the next day as officers continued to investigate the death.
Essex Police previously said no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Officers and police tape were seen in the road at the junction with Festival Way.
