A BUSY road is set to close for several weeks for utility works and part construction of a new relief road during the school holidays.

Maypole Road in Heybridge is now closed to all vehicles until early September.

The closure is taking place while utility services for the Westcombe Park housing development are installed, as well as construction of part of the new relief road between Langford Road and Broad Street Green.

Maldon and Burnham Standard:

Contractors working on behalf of Countryside Properties have temporarily closed a section of the road to route gas, water and electric services to the new housing development.

Due to the narrow nature of Maypole Road and the size of the excavation required to install the services, Essex County Council has said it will not be possible or safe for the road to remain open.

Work is being done during the school holidays when traffic is usually lighter.

Formal diversions will be in place during the closure, which is suitable for all vehicles, as no vehicles will be permitted to pass through the working area.

Staff will be available at the closure points to ensure it is observed and to assist residents, who will be able to access Crescent Road from Holloway Road.

No access will be possible to Crescent Road from the B1018 Langford Road and Heybridge Approach Roundabout, and access to businesses located along Maypole Road will only be available from the north end of the road.

As well as this, as part of the planning permission granted by Maldon Council, a left-right staggered junction will also be constructed on Maypole Road, which will eventually form part of a new relief road between Langford Road and Broad Street Green.

An Essex County Council spokesman said: “These works will inevitably cause some delay and inconvenience, so we ask drivers for their patience, and to allow extra travelling time when passing through the area, observing all traffic management in place.

“Bus operators are aware of these arrangements, with passengers requested to check the latest service information with the operator.”
