On Wednesday February 27, Purleigh Gardeners were entertained by Neil Catchpole of Wormingford with his talk about his experiences as a forester, Woodman and above all as a countryman.
Neil had a fund of hilarious stories about his work in tree culture, particularly is felling them which entertained his audience.
He is also a collector of hand tools associated with his profession and he had brought along a magnificent selection of axes, saws and drills.
It was surprising to see how by various manes a tree can acquire hidden defects which can cause problems for its locality. We learned a lot and laughed a lot.
The schedules for the Mini Spring Show on April 9 and for the Summer Horticultural Show on August 30 were distributed to members at the meeting and are available from Jan Robertson on 01245 225657.
Winners of the monthly competition were: 1 Jessamine Davis with a spray of prunusp; 2 Jill Gore with a stem of hellebore; 3 Angela Clark with an iris reticulata.
At the meeting on March 26, Barry Emerson will give an illustrated talk on "Growing Irises".
