Police have warned motorists against speeding in Maldon High Street after one driver was caught allegedly doing more than double the speed limit.

Essex Police officers in the Maldon Town team were on patrol with the South Essex Parking Partnership when they witnessed someone driving at an estimated 50mph in Maldon High Street.

Police said the speed limit is 20mph “for a reason”, because members of the public use the shops, bars and restaurants, as well as children, who often visit after school.

The driver will be receiving a court summons for careless driving as a result.

A spokesman for Essex Police in Maldon said: “The Maldon Town Team work closely with numerous partners.

“Yesterday, we conducted joint patrols with the South Essex Parking Partnership.

“We patrolled Maldon High Street with our colleagues from SEPP to deal with any parking issues.

“Whilst parking illegally is mainly a matter for the local authority, speeding along a 20mph High Street is very much a matter for the police.

“One driver, who felt that speeding through Maldon High Street at an estimated 50mph was acceptable, will be receiving a court summons for careless driving.

“The High Street is a 20mph zone for a reason. Lots of pedestrians use the local shops.

“Lots of school children frequent the area and in the evening, local residents enjoy the numerous bars and restaurants the town has to offer.”
