THE mayor of Maldon is “pleased and honoured” to be elected to be a new member of the district council.

Current Maldon town mayor Andrew Lay has been elected to represent the Maldon East ward on Maldon District Council.

He received 153 votes from residents in the ward.

After the announcement of his election, he rushed off on mayoral duties at Maldon Primary School.

His period as the town mayor will be over on May 15, after a busy year in the role.

He shared his excitement about his new role as a Maldon district councillor.

Mr Lay said: “This year has been a momentous year, both good and bad.

“I am pleased and honoured to represent the ward of Maldon East.

“I would like to thank my candidates Robert Roe and Christopher Swain.

“I look forward to my first district council meeting.

“People tell me it will be a lot different from the town council but I am looking forward to it.

“I’ve had about five years’ experience in the town council now and am ready to start at the district council.

“The town council has lost so many councillors, just like the district council, there have been a lot of changes.

“I look forward to working with the staff at the district council.”
