A FAMOUS turkey business is “going from strength to strength” after a challenging year.
Kelly Turkeys, a renowned Danbury-based turkey farming business, suffered a loss of £750,000 as a result of avian flu in 2022.
When speaking to the Maldon and Burnham Standard, managing director John Kelly said he had lost sleep worrying about the impact.
Now, the business is said to have recovered from the tough months and the fears are in the past.
Three generations of the Kelly family - Toby Kelly, managing director Paul Kelly and founder Derek Kelly met with Maldon MP Sir John Whittingdale - to show him how the business has overcome the challenges.
Sir John visited Kelly Turkeys at Springate Farm, Danbury, and also saw the new processing facility at Howe Green.
The politician discussed with Paul Kelly, the impact of avian flu on the poultry industry and the measures being taken ahead of any outbreak this winter, as well as labour supply problems and export challenges.
Sir John said: "Kelly Turkeys are rightly regarded as the finest in Britain. It is great to hear that the business has bounced back from the challenges of Covid and avian flu and is now going from strength to strength.”
