A BRAND new event is set to bring something different to a historic war-time site.
Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is hosting its first ever Wings ‘n’ Wags fun dog show at the heritage site.
There will be a range of competitions, but contest-shy dogs and owners are also welcome to go along for the day.
The competitions will be judged by celebrated breeder Sara Thompson, of Sunny Pride Ridgebacks.
The seven class categories, which cost £2 to enter per class, are the best Sopwith Pup (under one year), best oldie (over ten years), best new recruit and young handler on parade (under 12 years), best lady Model ‘T’ and crewman canine, best wartime rescue, Winco’s waggiest tail, Stow’s scruffiest hound and best in show.
Winners will receive medals, ribbons and prizes supplied by local furry-friendly firms Francis James and Partners Chartered Accountants, Gladwells Pet and Country Supplies and Maldon Salt.
There will be lots of stalls to explore and refreshments will be available in the Airmen’s Mess café and the museum exhibits, displays and shop will be open.
The event is a fundraiser to support the work to preserve the aerodrome.
Stow Maries boss Ian Flint said: “The idea for this event came from one of our own dog-owning volunteers who easily won us round to hosting a fun-filled day at the aerodrome with dogs competing in up to seven different categories.
“These include the Best Sopwith Pup for those under one year and an oldie award for those over 10 years old.
“In addition to the best in show award, there will also be a Stow’s scruffiest hound prize.”
The aerodrome, on Hackmans Lane, Purleigh, featured the largest collection of Royal Flying Corps buildings in the world.
The event is on bank holiday Sunday, August 27, from 10am to 4pm, with £5 admission payable on the gate.
Registration for the dog show is at 11am and judging in the first class will be taking place shortly after.
