THE new Bishop of Bradwell has been appointed at a ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
Rt Rev Adam Atkinson accepted the title at a service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury last week.
His new role covers south and mid Essex – stretching east from the Dartford Crossing to Southend and north via Brentwood and Chelmsford to Maldon and the Dengie Peninsula.
“Please do pray for me and all the people of God in the Bradwell area as we seek to follow Jesus together,” he said.
Mr Atkinson will be officially welcomed as the Bishop of Bradwell at a service at Chelmsford Cathedral on November 4.
He leaves behind his position as Archdeacon of Charing Cross. He was previously a director of mission development in the London Diocese and has also served as a parish priest in Stepney.
The new bishop succeeds Rt Rev Dr John Perumbalath, who became Bishop of Liverpool earlier this year.
The Bishop of Chelmsford, Rt Rev Dr Guli Francis-Dehqani, said Mr Atkinson’s experience will be a "great blessing” to the diocese.
“He will be joining a wonderful team of clergy and lay people who faithfully lead our churches in the Bradwell area,” she added.
