A TOLLESBURY man who swapped plumbing for ploughing picked up a top award at a college ceremony celebrating apprenticeships.
Elliot Yates, 21, received the farming apprentice of the year prize at the ceremony, which took place at Suffolk New College in Ipswich.
It was aimed at championing individuals who have benefited from studying on apprenticeship programmes, during a campaign called National Apprenticeship Week.
Elliot, who works at Maydays Farm, swapped his toolbox for tractors after being drawn to farming.
He said: “I did a harvest. I was kept on by the farm where I worked and then an opportunity opened up at Maydays.
“I chose this route as I wanted to get to know the ins and outs of farming, and gain a qualification and it’s been good. I drive the combine, do cultivation and spraying – I do a bit of everything.”
A total of nine awards were handed out in the surroundings of Chefs’ Whites restaurant.
Elliot said he discovered he had won the award while at home and randomly checking his emails.
He said: “ I got an email from the college to say I had won the award.
“I thought it might be junk mail – but did some research and found out it was true.
“Winning the award will help me in the future as I look to climb the career ladder and gain a more senior position.”
The master of ceremonies at the event was principal and chief executive of Suffolk New College Alan Pease.
He said: “These awards are always one of the highlights of the year.
"It is brilliant to be able to bring our students, staff and industry together to celebrate success during this event that is held during a national campaign to champion these brilliant qualifications.
“Well done to all of our winners and congratulations to Elliot.”
All winners received cash prizes, a trophy and a power bank charger.
