TWO inspirational women are walking hundreds of miles in aid of a charity which supports people with a life-threatening illness.
Lucy Cummins, 56, of Maylandsea, Essex, and Gynette Janney, 51, of Hawarden, in Flintshire, will be walking a staggering 260 miles from north Wales to London over the course of seven days.
Lucy and Gynette are raising funds for the Walk the Walk charity, an organisation set up in 1996 which raises money and awareness for important breast cancer research while championing walking as a way of keeping fit.
It grants funds to organisations across the UK helping those living with breast and other cancers.
The pair have been friends since 2013 and have already raised more than £100,000 between them for the charity.
Their latest challenge - seven ultras in seven days - will kick off on May 12.
Every day, the pair will walk at least 37 miles, and the opening leg will be from from Saltney, north Wales to Market Drayton, in Shropshire.
On the final day of the challenge, May 18, the duo will walk from Chiswick to Clapham Common in London, and then take on the London Moonwalk marathon at 10.30pm that night.
Lucy sadly lost her older sister to the disease eight years ago, so she is committed to raising funds for the charity.
She said: “Over the last two decades, walking has become such a huge part of my life. I can’t wait to take on my biggest challenge yet with my amazing walking friend Gynette.
"Walking such a long way is going to be a huge achievement, but my approach is simply going to be that I’ll put one foot in front of the other, for quite a long time.
"As a challenge, I feel it’s do-able and if I can raise even more money for the wonderful charity Walk the Walk, it’ll be totally fabulous.”
The charity has raised more than £141million so far and is known for organising the MoonWalk events in London, Scotland and Iceland, where participants walk a half or full marathon overnight.
Gynette said: “I’m really excited about taking on this huge challenge and feeling very positive about it.
“We’ve both done other multi day walking events previously, but obviously this one is a bit of step up."
