A MALDON resident has been recognised with an award thanks to her ‘outstanding commitment’ and years of hard work for the town.

Resident Judy Smith, 77, was awarded the Freedom of Maldon honour by the town council as a gesture of thanks for everything she has done for the community.

The Freedom of Maldon honour is a tradition which dates back centuries and symbolises the highest honour the town can bestow.

It is only given to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service and dedication to the betterment of the town.

Judy serves as the current president of the Maldon Rotary Club, and over the years has volunteered with the local scouts groups.

She has helped with charity events such as poppy appeals and has volunteered for Marie Curie and the town’s cabbie day fundraiser.

The diligent volunteer also goes to Plume Academy, in Fambridge Road, twice a week to help students who struggle with reading.

Speaking to the Maldon and Burnham Standard, Judy said she is extremely grateful for the award, although is not used to the attention as she enjoys “getting on with it” and working in “the background”.

“I don’t know how to put it into words," she said.

“It is an honour to be given this award and yes, I do feel humble.

“I have not over the years done what I’ve done for any great thanks, it is to give back to the community for what the community has given me.”

The event was attended by residents, community leaders, and guests, and it was a celebratory evening to express the town’s gratitude towards Judy.

During the ceremony, Judy was given a scroll and medal by the local authority.

Maldon’s mayor Andrew Lay said: “We are delighted to bestow the Freedom of Maldon upon Judy.

“Her exceptional contribution to our community and outstanding achievements serve as an inspiration to us all.

“We were honoured to celebrate Judy’s remarkable accomplishments at the ceremony and express our gratitude for her dedication and service to the Town."

Now bestowed with the honour, Judy will be invited to attend the town’s annual mayor-making event, other formal civic events, and other functions throughout the year.
