NEW ‘bespoke’ play equipment to replace the existing Galleon Ship in Maldon’s Promenade Park will be sent to the council for approval this week.

The proposal is said to be an “updated replacement of the existing play equipment” with the key addition of the new lighthouse.

The new “bespoke pirate ship and lighthouse” will be in the same area as the existing pirate ship in the council-owned Promenade Park on Park Drive.

The new structure would be a maximum of 19.5 metres in width, 17.6 metres in depth, and have a maximum height to the top of the mast of 6.6 metres – taller than the existing Galleon Ship.

Both the pirate ship and lighthouse will include slides, climbing ladders or ropes, a zip lines, a fireman’s pole, and climbing walls.

Other fun common features found on both structures would be masts, cannons, look out points, windows and “crashing waves”.

Further, to look more like the sea “all year round”, a sun, clouds, and seagulls will also be features.

The materials will consist of various coloured high-density polyethylene, steel posts, rope, and transparent items which are “commonly associated” with outdoor play equipment.

Though not identified by Historic England as a ‘formally registered park’, Promenade Park has been identified to be a local ‘Historic Park and Garden’.
