AN annual event full of family fun which raises money for individuals battling life-limiting illnesses in the memory of community stalwart is heading back to Maldon.
The David Randall Foundation's annual Rock Up for Randall event is back in town later this month.
Organised by his namesake charity, the occasion seeks to provide as many good days as possible for people with life-limiting conditions and recognise talented young sportspeople and musicians with scholarships and awards.
The event commemorates the life of community stalwart David Randall.
The David Randall Foundation was set up more than a decade ago by Maldon Cricket Club members when their teammate of the same name was diagnosed as having terminal bowel cancer.
David had been a member of the club since the age of six and was just 26 when diagnosed in February 2012, before his birthday, and died the same year in July at 27.
This year is the 12th Rock Up for Randall event.
The community gathering not only aims to raise funds for individuals battling life-limiting illnesses but also offers an opportunity for family fun.
A new feature of this year's event will be the last moments of a 24-hour charity darts marathon.
On the first day of the event at 6pm, the 24-hour marathon will be live-streamed.
Volunteers will attempt to score 392,000 points, mirroring the number of cancer diagnoses made last year in the UK.
The following Sunday morning, the cricketing theme will continue with an inter-club cricket festival.
Family-friendly activities are also on the cards for the Sunday afternoon with food and craft stalls, a barbecue, an auction and, to cap the day, an evening of live music from 7pm to 11pm featuring a Michael Jackson tribute act and an Oasis tribute band.
Westcombe Park developer Countryside Homes has also been revealed as the headline sponsor of the event.
Patron of the David Randall Foundation and former England cricket captain Sir Alastair Cook, said: "The annual Rock Up for Randall Day is a brilliant event that my whole family looks forward to.
"It is truly a celebration of David's life and his passions.
"Every year the event just seems to get bigger and better."
The event will return on Saturday, August 24, and Sunday, August 25, at Maldon Cricket Club.
