A POPULAR week-long event made its grant return and enjoyed plenty of success.

The returning Burnham Week was back in town, with nearly 180 entries for this year's event.

Burnham Week is known as the East coast's most challenging and friendly regatta, set in the River Crouch off Burnham.

More than 20 categories are available to enter, including dinghies, cruisers, Dragons and Gig racing, with plenty of activities on and off the water, including a firework display on the final day.

Throughout the week there was glorious sailing weather enjoyed by all before strong winds, high swell and overcast skies arrived on the last Saturday.

The Gigs raced for the Nelson Cup which was won by the Burnham on Crouch Coastal Rowing Club in Wren.

The Thames Barge, Cambria, arrived on the RBYC pontoon and visitors crowded into town to enjoy the pirates taking over the Quayside and all the fun of Quay Day.

The dinghies were based at the Burnham Sailing Club with three lively days of eight races, with races for juniors alongside seniors.

It went down to the last downwind leg when Jack Mills and his crew were crowned the winners of the Commodores Cup 2024.

Elsewhere at the event, the annual Duck Race raised funds for the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance and was watched by crowds on the Quay.

Spectators were also treated to a festive atmosphere with food and drink vendors, music, and other entertainment, before enjoying the fireworks to end the week.

Edwin Buckley, principal race officer for Burnham Week said: "Burnham Week 2024 was a true celebration of sailing, showcasing the spirit and tradition that define this iconic regatta.

"The week was a testament to resilience and competition and the weather played its part and provided thrilling races.

"Visitors and locals enjoyed the spectacle of the Thames Barge, Cambria, and the lively Quay Day festivities. On the water, each day was exciting and great fun,

"The crowning glory was the Town Cup, claimed by Hullabaloo XV for the second consecutive year, symbolising excellence and teamwork.

"As tradition dictates, the week closed with a spectacular firework display, lighting up the skies over the River Crouch—a fitting end to a Burnham Week that truly had everything."
