A SOUL-SINGER performed at a pub's charity fundraiser to raise money for his daughter with a rare illness.

Kenny Thomas was at the Roundbush Country Pub and Kitchen in Purleigh for the special event.

The event managed to raise a significant amount of money for Kenny’s daughter Christina, 11, who suffers from a rare illness which has resulted in many events taking place to raise money for her.

Christina has been battling a glioma, an aggressive brain tumour for seven-and-a-half-years, after being given six months to live when she was diagnosed.

Mr Thomas has previously had to take his daughter to Europe for her treatment, which costs thousands each time.

Kenny said: “Ultimately Mark Peters and Gary Smith did a great job of putting everything together.

“The battle of my daughter has been ongoing for seven-and-a-half-years, which has involved taking her to Germany for special treatment and we needed this money to keep the machinery going.

“There was a mixture of old and new faces at the event and I spoke to them a lot about Christina.

“It’s amazing, the last seven and a half years I could write a book about the people who have helped us.

“If it’s taught me anything, if you have any doubts about humanity just look at what they’ve done for us.”

More than 300 people were in attendance as the event raised a whopping £5,000 towards Christina’s treatment and supporting the young farmers in their efforts to get a new guide dog.

They managed to raise around £500 for the young farmers, which was short of their target, so organiser Gary Smith and the landlord of the pub kindly put in £100 each to get them there.

Mr Smith said: “The night went really well, being able to raise all that money for Kenny’s daughter and having around 360 people was amazing.

“It was a great success for a truly genuine and worthy cause, with sincere thanks to all the people and businesses that contributed.”

Part of the event saw a raffle with loads of businesses kindly donating prizes of up to £500.

Mitchel’s Jewellers was the top contributor with a staggering £500 gift card to spend at their store in Maldon.

With a total of six amazing raffle prizes available and an array of entertainment, the event was seen as a fantastic success.
