A concert is set to take place in Maldon to raise money for the Ukrainian Red Cross.

Maldon Choral will be hosting the 'Concert for Ukraine' on November 23 at 4.30pm at the Maldon United Reformed Church.

The concert will feature performances of Sir John Rutter's 'A Ukrainian Prayer', a choral piece written in March 2022 in response to the war in Ukraine, and his popular 'Requiem'.

The 'Requiem' will be performed by Ukrainian soprano soloist Khrystyna Makar, who was invited to sing at the event.

Ms Makar was born in Lviv, Ukraine, and has performed in concert halls and festivals across Europe, including in Berlin, Hamburg, Oslo, and Vienna.

In July 2022, she moved to the UK with her two sons after Russia invaded Ukraine.

The concert will also feature a performance of Stanford's 'Last Post', with a trumpet solo played by Essex-based Will Potten.

Musical director Ashley Thompson said: "November is often a time when music reflects society by pausing to remember.

"It's a particular privilege this year that Maldon Choral is able to combine our own very British remembrance traditions, through a choral rendering of The Last Post and Rutter's Requiem, with music reflecting the present day conflict zone of Ukraine.

"Please do join us, and Ukrainian soloist Khrystyna Makar, for this very special concert."

Tickets cost £15 and are available at Maldon Books, at the door, or online.
