A recent survey conducted by the Royal Mint reveals that coins are the most popular collectable item in the UK.
Over a third of collectors have a passion for coins. Stamps and books came in second and third place for most popular collectable items.
Millions across the globe collect coins, with over half of British collectors beginning their collecting journey with an unusual coin found in their change.
The survey also revealed that Gen Z collectors are the most likely age group to start collecting coins, with 43% owning a collection and 58% increasing their collections over the past 12 months.
They are also using the hobby as a means of investment. 38% of Gen Zs and over a quarter of Millennials see their collections as personal investments, with their collections increasing in value over time.
Rebecca Morgan, Director of Collector Services at the Royal Mint, said, “Britain is a nation of collectors and we are delighted that coins remain at the heart of that tradition. Collecting coins can help to bring generations together and we have seen a particular rise in generation Z over the last year.
“As the original maker of coins, the Royal Mint has a wide range of resources to help people start or build a meaningful collection. Whether you are exploring treasures handed down through the family, investing in rare pieces or scouring your change for modern classics – coin collecting remains a fun and rewarding hobby.”
