COLCHESTER United and Grimsby Town supporters were left frustrated after their teams' League Two clash was called off, on Tuesday night.

But two enterprising Mariners fans ensured that their 316-mile round trip to Essex was not entirely wasted.

After their side's game against the U's was called off 90 minutes before kick-off due to a waterlogged pitch at the JobServe Community Stadium, loyal Grimsby fans Lewis Dawes and Connor Brogan decided to take a detour to Park Drive to take in the BBC Essex Senior Cup quarter-final tie between Maldon and Tiptree and Little Oakley.

The Jammers ran out 2-1 winners, thanks to a goal deep into stoppage time scored by Milton Oni.

Maldon acknowledged the Grimsby-supporting duo on social media, after the game.

They wrote: 'A special thank you to the two @officialgtfc fans who watched our game last night, we hope you enjoyed the match and got home safe! 👊 Your both welcome back anytime @connorbrogan16 & @LDawes1998🍓'.

And Mariners fan Lewis replied: 'Pleasure going. Thanks for having us and we'll definitely be back! Up the Jammers!'

Visitors Little Oakley were also quick to acknowledge the efforts of Lewis and Connor on social media: 'Excellent advert for Non-league cup football tonight despite the result, great to see two @officialgtfc fans supporting the Non-league after their @SkyBetLeagueTwo fixture against @ColU_Official was called off. Safe journey back gents @LDawes1998'.
