A HEYBRIDGE resident was among those honoured at the Essex County Football Association’s recent awards night.
Brian Stubbings has dedicated more than 50 years to football.
He received the prestigious Long Service Award for his contributions to the Prokit Essex Olympian League at the special event held at Colchester United Football Club.
The awards celebrate the dedication and passion of local individuals who have supported the growth and success of grassroots football in Essex.
Brian, 78, first began his football journey as a player for Burnham Ramblers Football Club, which competes in the Essex Olympian League.
After an injury cut his playing career short, he transitioned to refereeing.
His commitment and love for the sport saw him join the Olympian League's committee, where he has held several key roles, including Publicity Officer, Referee Secretary, and, since 2000, Chairman - a position he continues to hold today.
Reflecting on his incredible journey, Brian said: "When I was younger, I played football for Maldon Town and then Burnham Ramblers in the Essex Olympian League.
"After my injury, I took up refereeing and was later invited onto the committee. I first served as Publicity Secretary and then Referee Secretary for 13 years.
"In 2000, I was asked if I’d like to be Chairman of the Prokit Essex Olympian League, and I’ve done that ever since—for 24 years now."
Brian’s leadership has seen the league expand to more than 50 clubs, most of which have two teams, meaning around 100 teams compete each week.
"It’s the best league in the county," he added.
"I have a good, hard-working committee, and we look after grassroots football.
"We expanded last season, and I’m just proud to be chairman of the league."
Alongside his award from the Essex County FA, Brian also received a special award from the Olympian League itself.
Grateful for the recognition, he said: "I feel very happy to receive this award. Long may I continue."
Also honoured at the event was Clive Cheeseman from Goldhanger, who received the Outstanding Service Award for his 30 years of work as the Registration Secretary of the Prokit Essex Olympian League.
