MALDON Golf Club’s immediate past-captain Pete Hawkins finished the season on a high by capturing the Lauder Quaich, his fifth trophy of the year.
The Quaich weekend also saw Captain Jim Culleton preside over his final Sunday competition before handing the reins to Terry Butcher at Friday’s annual meeting.
The Lauder Quaich is a limited, singles medal competition open to those who were winners of the men’s Sunday singles competitions and monthly medals throughout the season.
Non-qualifiers competed in the medal but only as part of an impromptu swindle.
Hawkins shot a net 72 off five-handicap to win by one shot from Andrew Erskine (87-14-73).
Third place went to Mike Kempen (86-10-76).
In the swindle the winner was Dave Newton with a fine nett 69.
Jim Scott was second with nett 70 and past captain Des Bastian third with nett 71.
The nearest the pin prizes this week went to Martin Read on the par three fifth/14th hole and to Richard Nash on the sixth/15th.
Maldon Ladies played for the Barker Cup in a singles stableford competition.
Not for the first time this year, Sue Gardiner ran out the winner, with 28 points.
Second place went to Margaret Caviel on 25 points.
Places from third to fifth were decided on countback as three ladies returned scores of 22 points.
They were Jane Henderson, Jean Roberts and Val Rayner respectively.
Over the two days of October 18-19, 64 Maldon members and golfing friends descended upon Stoke-by-Nayland Golf Club for the annual Holland Brothers Ryder Cup Challenge.
Maldon members Rob and Paul Holland are team captains and host this annual event where two, randomly drawn teams of 32 players contest 16 betterball, matchplay games on the Sunday followed by 32 singles matches on the Monday.
This year, for the first time since the event’s inauguration in 2008, Paul Holland’s team was victorious, by 31 matches to 17.
