ROUND five of Maldon Golf Club’s Ben Volta Winter League was played in windy conditions.
This week’s format was a greensomes stableford competition played off 50 per cent combined handicap. The forecast of heavy rain never materialised, despite a few light, blustery showers.
The winners, with a fine score of 42 points, were Ed Bishop and Paul Nash.
Second place went to club captain Terry Butcher and his partner Alan Syrett on 40 points.
Third place went to Lenny Blagden and Ian Ladkin with 39, on countback from Malcolm Burnett and Bill Guthrie, while Leon Griffiths and Bill Shelley claimed fifth spot with 38.
The nearest-the-pin prize went to Richard Nash on the par three fifth/14th with what was the very first shot of the day on that hole.
There were two prizes up for grabs under greensomes conditions so Nash’s partner Jim Scott also grabbed a bottle.
The popular Saturday afternoon swindle was won by the fourball of Dave Allen, Bill Shelley, Duncan Kilby and Rob Poynton with 86 points, giving them a ten-shot winning margin.
On Friday, a large party of Maldon members represented the Club at the annual Essex Golf Union annual dinner at Colne Valley Golf Club.
A good time was had by all, with fine food and a most entertaining, after-dinner speaker.
